I thought I’d give you a little history about me and why it is that I do what I do.
Well you see I love people and fabric. I know that seems a weird combination to then decide to be a seamstress but I’m a really creative person; I’ve always been better with my hands than anything else and after having a very practical upbringing I can pretty much turn my hand to anything when it comes to creation. Cue the multiple houses that me and my family have renovated over the years ourselves.
I’ve always loved creating things from a young age and as such we were always involved when my dad was doing jobs in the house. I found I was best with decorating, wallpapering and you guessed it… fabrics! My joy for working with them just grew and when I was forced to give up my career in the beauty industry I decided to go at it alone and set up my little sewing business- Dolly’s Designs. Not only could I continue to earn money doing what I love but I could get my creation fixed knowing that it would bring happiness to other people.
Then people are my biggest drive to why I decided to become a seamstress. I adore making people happy and the look on their faces when they receive the piece they’ve commissioned is enough for me as it just lights me up from within. I feel so privileged to be able to create these pieces for my customers as I know the stress it takes away from them, knowing another thing is being taken care of for them. Unfortunately happiness doesn’t pay the bills so I do charge for my work, but if we lived in a different life, just knowing the joy that I can bring to a person’s day would be enough for me to enjoy making and creating everything that I do.
Over Christmas I took the time to just be with my family as they are so important to me and I love to spend as much time as possible with them. But I also did something for myself over the holidays. I think that when we work for ourselves we can get wrapped up in pleasing our customers and forget about taking the time to create things for ourselves. Isn’t that why we decided to do it in the first place?
Nowadays I wear dresses all the time and I had seen a pattern I loved so I made the decision to do something for myself, I got my pencils out and created myself a design that I could wear and be super comfortable in. So I took the time and have made myself a new dress which I absolutely love!
